The Statue of Liberty NYC SFO, eight thirty am. Heading back home after two weeks in the USA. The excuse for this trip, the meeting of the SAA; a business gathering over four thousand archaeologists.  This has been a very interesting anthropological experience. Segregation, gentrification, exclusion and a bit of heritage, just a bit. In the way I could see, far away, a World Heritage Site; the Statue of Liberty. I saw it from Battery Park because the price and the large queue made me wonder how valuable was my little time in the great apple. What are the values of the Statue? While I was deciding if queuing or not, I had the opportunity to talk with a couple of Spaniards and another one of Dutch, both in their wedding trip. When asking why were they visiting the Statue, both answered the same: it is one of the things you must visit when you come to NYC. Al fondo... La Estatua de la Libertad Aeropuerto de San Francisco, ocho de la mañana. Llevo tres horas levantado, pero esta vez he decidido hacerlo así para atenuar un poco el jet lag cuando vuelva. A ver si funciona. Llevo dos semanas en los Estados Unidos, primero en Nueva York y ahora en San Francisco. Vuelvo a casa. La excusa de este viaje ha sido un congreso, la reunión de la Sociedad Americana de Arqueología; un negocio que ha reunido a más de cuatro mil personas en la ciudad. Bamiyan Buddhas exploding... It was March 2001 if I recall well. First time I heard about the Buddhas, first time I heard about the Talibans. I was a young high school student about to go to university... I never expected I was going to write about this today. In a matter of months, we heard about Al-Qaeda and the war on terror came. Three years later, a strike in university saved some friends from this terror in Madrid. In 2007 I walked by the scars of this same terror in London, right next to the Institute of Archaeology. Time passed, the war is still there, and now we hear about ISIS and lonely jihadists. Yesterday, two of them killed 12 people in Paris, only because their satirical magazine offended their beliefs. Today, rage is again in the streets, also in France. Muslims are targeted as a threat and people look around scared. Bamiyan was inscribed in the World Heritage List (directly in danger) in 2003. Many stakeholders are involved in the process of World Heritage nomination. Sorting them out and making them effective is one of the most complex management tasks. WH is not the same when addressing tourist agents, politicians or local communities; however, discourses created around World Heritage usually appear to be indifferent to the real stakeholders, individuals and societies, often being repetitive and lacking synergies. New discourses should be created at different scales in order to communicate and seek protection measures according to the needs of each site, to the needs of the people on that site. The aims of this session are to share the existing working models, identifying their shortcomings and making improvement proposals.

En el proceso de declaración de Patrimonio Mundial (PM) están implicados muchos agentes. Ordenarlos y hacerlos efectivos es una de las tareas más complejas en gestión. No es lo mismo hablar de PM con agentes turísticos que con políticos o con las comunidades locales; en cambio, los discursos que se crean en torno al Patrimonio Mundial suelen aparecer ajenos a las partes realmente implicadas, personas y sociedades, repetitivos y carentes de sinergias. Han de ser replanteados a distintas escalas para llegar a ser capaces de comunicarnos y de buscar medidas de protección acordes a las necesidades de cada sitio, de las personas de cada sitio. Enseñar los modelos de trabajo que existen, detectar sus carencias y hacer propuestas de mejora, son los objetivos de esta sesión.
