Bamiyan Buddhas exploding... It was March 2001 if I recall well. First time I heard about the Buddhas, first time I heard about the Talibans. I was a young high school student about to go to university... I never expected I was going to write about this today. In a matter of months, we heard about Al-Qaeda and the war on terror came. Three years later, a strike in university saved some friends from this terror in Madrid. In 2007 I walked by the scars of this same terror in London, right next to the Institute of Archaeology. Time passed, the war is still there, and now we hear about ISIS and lonely jihadists. Yesterday, two of them killed 12 people in Paris, only because their satirical magazine offended their beliefs. Today, rage is again in the streets, also in France. Muslims are targeted as a threat and people look around scared. Bamiyan was inscribed in the World Heritage List (directly in danger) in 2003. When writing this title for the session, mostly everybody can think of tourism and without a doubt, it is so. Tourism is an engine of economic development. In fact, employment and growth data on tourism- related activities greatly surpasses all the other sectors and much tourism is focused on Cultural Heritage, both tangible and intangible. However, Cultural Heritage is more than that, and economic assets should not be the only measure of its worth. Life quality and sustainability, as well as sustainable tourism are key terms that have been greatly used, but in practice they do not fully perform. This Menorca Conference aims to gather experts in economics and business, but also experts in “feelings”. We are interested in socio-urban wealth improvements in global terms, economic and cultural enrichment for those who live in the places, not only for the tourist business. World Heritage should first serve its nearby inhabitants, its people and communities; and more attention is needed to ...

Nada más poner este título para la sesión, la mayoría de gente pensamos en turismo y francamente, no tenemos dudas de este hecho. Se admite: en números y crecimiento de empleo todo lo relacionado con el turismo gana al resto de sectores. Pero el Patrimonio Cultural no es solo eso y los términos económicos no deben ser su única medida. Calidad de vida y sostenibilidad, o incluso turismo sostenible, son términos clave que se han manejado con abundancia, pero que en la práctica no parecen ser capaces de encontrar sus caminos. Queremos personas expertas en economía y en empresas, cantidades y números, pero también sentimientos, mejoras sociourbanas, riqueza en términos globales, enriquecimiento económico y cultural de quienes habitan en los sitios, no sólo de la empresa turística.
